I've made these cut-out cookies for years and they are wonderful. Many people have asked what cookie recipe I use and I always give them a copy of this one. Recipe comes from the 1973 printing of The Joy of Cooking.
Cream the butter and sugar. Then beat in one egg. Finally, add salt and vanilla and the flour, in small amounts. Blend well. Chill dough 3 to 4 hours before rolling. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll and cut. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until slightly colored. Decorate if desired.
